The wait is finally over for gamers in the UK as the latest next-generation machine has finally hit the shelves.

The PlayStation 5 has gone on sale in the UK – and desperate gamers will be scrambling to snag a new console.

Not everybody will be able to get their hands on the new model but lucky shoppers might be able to bag one as new stock drops at midday.

When your PS5 does arrive you might not have shelves filled with the most updated games – but all is not lost.

That’s because thanks to some smart programming, you can play PlayStation 4 games on the newest console.

The new console has backward compatibility

The “overwhelming majority” of PS4 games you’ve bought over the past few years will be compatible with next-generation consoles, The Express reported.

The new console is largely based on the same architecture as its predecessor, Wired reported, meaning older games will still work.

If you downloaded your old games direct from Sony’s online store, you’re also able to re-download them for the PS5.

Similarly, you’ll also be able to insert your physical game discs into the PS5.

Older games will still work on the new model

There is a snag if you bought the PS5 digital edition, which is designed to only use downloaded games.

So physical discs won’t work with that model – only games that exist on your PlayStation account.

There are believed to be just 10 games that won’t work on the PS5, according to gaming website Push Square.

These include ‘Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma Volume One’, ‘DWVR’, ‘Hitman Go: Definitive Edition’, ‘Joe’s Diner’, ‘Just Deal With It!’, Robinson: The Journey’, ‘Shadow Complex Remastered’, ‘Shadwen’, ‘TT Isle of Man – Ride on the Edge 2’, and ‘We Sing’.

There are a number of other games that may have some errors when played on the PS5.
